Wario is a recurring character in the Super Mario franchise, designed to be an arch-rival to Mario. He is a muscular, hot-tempered, obese, and greedy character, usually playing the role of an anti-hero or an antagonist; he has also gone on to become the protagonist of his own self-named franchise, the Wario franchise, including games, such as the Wario Land series and the WarioWare series.

Wario has two iconic vehicles usually seen in his series of titles: the Wario Car from the Wario Land series, and the Wario Bike in the WarioWare titles. In addition, he owns a plane called the Bulldog, which appears in Mario and Wario and Wario's Woods, among other titles. In Wario Land II and Wario World, he is depicted as owning his own castle. The WarioWare series of games depicts him as owning a microgame-creating company called WarioWare Inc. based in Diamond City. Wario also appears in the Super Smash Bros. series, in which he is classified under the Wario franchise, represented by his "W" symbol, separately from the Super Mario franchise.

As a child, Baby Wario is prone to tantrums, and already has a penchant for riches. Like all of the other children of the Mushroom Kingdom, in Yoshi's Island DS, he is kidnapped by Kamek and a time-traveling Bowser from the future, who are in search of the star children: seven legendary babies of unknown power, of which Baby Wario is a member. However, he escapes the Koopas' clutches and instead joins Yoshi and friends, helping them for a brief amount of time by using his oversized magnet to attract coins and other metal objects. He eventually parts ways with the Yoshis to join a coven of Bandits, only to reemerge in the game's final hours. Baby Wario is last seen in the ending, arguing with Baby Bowser over a barge full of coins. It is uncertain if he ever returned to his parents.

Later on in his life, Mario and Wario became rivals. Since childhood, Wario was jealous of the more popular Mario. The exact nature of their childhood relationship is briefly shown in Mario vs. Wario, which reveals a young Wario being bullied at the hands of a well-intentioned child Mario, who did not realize the lasting effect of his games.

Wario is the main antagonist of Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. Driven by a lifetime of jealousy, Wario sought to take over Mario's castle in Mario Land. After many unsuccessful attempts, Wario finally takes over as Mario is away saving Princess Daisy from Tatanga's clutches in Super Mario Land. He hypnotizes the citizens of Mario Land with a magic spell, and scatters the six Golden Coins, the keys to the castle, across Mario Land.

In the battle, Wario first stomps the ground, causing the crystal balls moving across the ceiling above to fall. In the next room, Wario uses a Carrot to become Bunny Wario, giving him the ability to flutter across the screen before slamming the ground. In the last room, Wario becomes Fiery Wario, who leaps across the screen and shoots fireballs upon landing. When Wario is defeated, he shrinks down and throws off one of his shoes at Mario before running off the castle's balcony, crying, Mario's castle returns to normal.

Wario is one of the protagonists in Super Mario 64 DS, though his role is motivated by treasure. At some point, when Wario enters the Mushroom Castle with Mario and Luigi, the three are kidnapped by Bowser, leaving Yoshi to rescue each of them. The key to Wario's switching room is unlockable only by Luigi defeating Chief Chilly at the end of Chief Chilly Challenge, which is entered through a painting that pictures Wario. When Wario's room is opened, he becomes unlocked for play.

In gameplay, Wario has low speed and agility, but he is the strongest character. Wario's unique move, Wario Whack, allows him to destroy certain objects that other characters cannot, such as Black Bricks. Wario's Power Flower ability is Metal Power, which replaces the Metal Mario form from Super Mario 64. Exclusively in VS. Mode, Wario can use the Swing and Fling, which has him lift stunned opponents, spin them around, and throw them.

Several mini-games in the Rec Room feature Wario, including Coincentration, Intense Coincentration, Wanted!, Connect the Characters, and Mix-a-Mug.

Wario represents player 3 in the Vs. battle screen of Mini-Games mode in New Super Mario Bros.. He also appears in Coincentration, and Wanted! both returning from Super Mario 64 DS.

In New Super Mario Bros. U, if Player 3 is a Mii, they wear a yellow shirt and purple overalls, which matches Wario's clothing. This costume is retained from the tech demo New Super Mario Bros. Mii.

In Super Mario Maker, Wario is one of several costumes available for the Mystery Mushroom in the Super Mario Bros. style. He wears his outfit from the WarioWare series. He can be unlocked by scanning a Wario amiibo, or randomly from completing the Super Mario Challenge on any difficulty. If the player taps the "M" of "MARIO" on the title screen, it flips to an upside-down yellow "W," and a stock voice clip of Wario plays. If the title course is in the Super Mario Bros. style, the "W" will shoot out the Wario Mystery Mushroom costume.

Wario's outfit and hat can be purchased at any Crazy Cap store in Super Mario Odyssey, but the character does not appear himself. One of the methods to obtain either item involves scanning a Wario amiibo. Both outfits make note of Wario's bad hygiene.

In the Legacy of Chris Thorndyke,

And he will be voiced by Kyle Hebert in the English dub as a tribute for Charles Martinet's retirement, and he is voiced by Bin Shimada as a tribute for Chikao Otsuka.
